PORTLAND MEMORY GARDEN

The Portland Memory Garden is open to the entire community, but was specifically designed to meet the special needs of those with memory disorders (such as Alzheimer’s disease) and to provide respite for their caregivers. The garden was dedicated in May 2002 and is one of eight memory gardens in the U.S., and one of only two built on public land.

The garden includes four seasons of plants and flowers in raised beds that have been chosen to stimulate the senses and to spark past memories, as well as provide a totally accessible circular pathway and visual landmarks.  The fenced garden offers security and comfort for families as well as a restroom and drinking fountains.

This project was a collaborative effort of the Oregon-Greater Idaho Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, American Society of Landscape Architects, Center of Design for an Aging Society, Portland State University/School of Urban Studies & Planning, Legacy Health Systems, and Portland Parks & Recreation.

Today the garden is managed by the Friends of the Portland Memory Garden, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Volunteers interested in helping in the garden have several opportunities a month and anyone looking to support the garden can make a tax deductible donation online or by contacting us.
